Community wellbeing is a key focus of the work of our
association, we are compiling a list of health related resources which
we hope will be useful for our members.
Mental Health
The focus of the first community health section is mental
health.
Some facts you probably didn't know about mental health
- 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem
at some point in their lives.
- Almost 75% of people know someone who has been diagnosed
with a mental illness.
- Just over 50% of people would not want anyone to know
if they developed a mental illness.
- 50% of people with mental illness have reported abuse or
harassment.
- Only a quarter of people with long term mental health
problems work, although studies suggest two thirds want to.
- Fewer than four in ten employers would consider employing
someone with a history of mental health problems, compared to
more than 6 in ten for candidates with physical disability.
- 33% of people with mental health problems report having
been dismissed or forced to resign from their job.
- 70% of people affected by mental illness have experienced
discrimination because of it.
- People with mental health problems are much more likely
to be the victims rather than the perpetrators of violent
crime.
- 50% of people with mental illness say that media portrayals
of mental illness have a negative effect on their mental
health.
