Victoria Park Geese
There was some media coverage on Radio Ulster this morning concerning an application for a bird cull in Victoria Park. The application was submitted by the George Best City Airport.
The BBC have published an article which states that the airport did submit a precautionary application in response to a risk assessment carried out in to flight safety. The option to cull does stand, if other methods are not successful. The article outlines the alternative method which will be used.
"The airport will use a method known as "oiling and pricking" of eggs to reduce the number of young geese.
An airport spokesman described the process: "
Egg pricking/oiling takes place when the eggs are three to five days old.
"At this stage only yolk is contained within the egg. Following the procedure the yolk does not develop any further.
"This is recognised as the the most humane method of controlling the Grey-Lag geese population, causing little distress to the adult birds.
